Hi, hello and the warmest of welcomes to the place where I share my thoughts and my work with you.

You may have ended up here through my Instagram page, in which case you are probably looking for more background information on me,  the machine, or are looking to obtain a copy of one of my drawings. In the last case I’d happily like to redirect you to the store.

Short bio

My name is Marinus, born in 1984 in the city of Haarlem where I currently also reside. A fascination for detail and a relation between arts, geometry and engineering has always played an important role in my life. When I left my job as a graphic designer in 2011 to go back to school and study interior architecture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, I got exposed to many new disciplines within art & design. This proved to be a jumpstart to a process that involved designing and building my own tools and machines like a 3D-printer, lasercutter, an automatic soap-bubble blower/generator, four more 3D-printers and eventually four different drawing machines (also known as pen plotters).

This fascination didn’t just entail designing and building the physical stage, as there seemed to be a natural tendency or need to control the entire process from the initial idea and sketches, to designing and prototyping the idea/machine to actually finalizing the design and working with it. This also means programming the on-board computers, scripting/programming, soldering, designing cases for the electronics, and 3D printing all the parts that make the machine. And that’s only the design and build stage.

Prototyping a machine can be messy!

All of this tinkering turned out to become not just a project, but something bigger, almost as if it’s a part of me.

Of course, when you have built a certain tool like a drawing machine, after that comes the stage of experimenting and playing with it. Learning how the tool works, finding out what can be improved, and most important of all: learning how much more it can do than was initially expected when the project started.

All of this tinkering turned out to become not just a project, but something bigger, almost as if it’s a part of me. Beyond building the machines, I have developed a symbiosis with my machines. We work together to create the artworks that are available in the store.

If you want to know more about my work, Instagram is a great place to start, and if you feel you need to know more, you’re more than welcome to pop me a message.
